Center for Star Formation Studies: Schedule

Monthly Workshops at NASA Ames Research Center

The meetings are held in a very informal format, with discussion and questions encouraged during the talks. Generally, there are about 4 talks, two in the morning and two in the afternoon, and we all go to lunch together at the NASA Ames cafeteria. Attendance is usually about 30-40 people, and we often invite one or two invited speakers from outside the local area.

Monthly meetings are generally held at NASA Ames Research Center from 10:00 am to about 4:00 pm. Visitors not on the e-mail distribution list need to contact T.R. Chandler at tchandler@mail.arc.nasa.gov in order that they be issued passes at the security gate. Please give your nationality and the institution with which you are currently associated. For foreign visitors, a week lead time is required. For visitors from "restricted" countries (e.g., India, China) at least three weeks lead time is required, and we cannot, unfortunately, guarantee admittance.

The summer workshop usually extends for 4-5 days, and involves many more visitors from all over the world. The attendance is of order 100 people, and the talks are shorter, of order of 20 minutes but with plenty of time for informal discussion.

In 1999 the summer workshop was jointly sponsered by the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) Project and was held from July 12-17 at the University of California at Santa Cruz.

In 2000, the workshop was jointly sponsored by the astrophysics group at Arcetri Observatory and was held in Volterra, Italy, from May 31 to June 3. The workshop was entitled "High Mass Star Formation: An Origin in Clusters."

In 2001, the summer workshop was held from July 14-19 and the University of California at Santa Cruz, and focused on the topic entitled "Star Formation in the Galactic Context."

In 2002, the summer workshop was jointly sponsored by the Academia Sinica Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, and was held in Taroko Gorge, Taiwan, from June 11 to June 17. The workshop was entitled "Magnetohydrodynamics, Radiation Diagnostics, and Chemistry of Star Formation."
