Treman State Park
This is a picture of the entrance to a gorge at Treman park, near Cornell University. It was quite beautiful there, especially in the summer when there were very few people around. I always thought that this is what Tolkien must have been imagining when he wrote about the dwarves cutting structures out of the "living rock." In this case the rock is Ithaca Shale and it cleaves at nearly right angles, making it difficult to tell what was cut by water and what was cut with tools. The structure is remarkably in tune with its natural surroundings is it not?
